The Contemporary Good Design Award (CGDA), co-launched by the Red Dot Award Organization (Germany) and Xiamen Media Group, has adhered to the international jury standards of the Red Dot Award since its establishment in 2015. It aims to build a bridge between design, enterprises and global business, and select excellent designs for contemporary society.

During the 2023 Contemporary Good Design Award, Red Dot Design Museum · Xiamen was celebrating its 5th anniversary. The judging phase of this year's competition has concluded, with unprecedentedly fierce competition among various products. After rigorous selection, the organizing committee chose to present this design award—selected from a large number of outstanding works—to the AI Baby Monitor product.

The Winning Product

This AI Baby Monitor stands out among numerous entries like a considerate guardian, thanks to its unique design and functions. Its launch not only provides a brand-new medical product solution for infant health monitoring but also demonstrates the perfect integration of technology and art from a product design perspective.

It is reported that insufficient sleep is one of the key risk factors for obesity in infants, young children, and even adults, as well as chronic diseases such as Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disorders. Specifically designed for infant sleep monitoring, this monitor pioneeringly applies millimeter-wave radar tomographic sensing technology and big data AI visual analysis technology. It achieves 24/7 quasi-medical-grade monitoring of multiple vital signs (including respiration, heart rate, and sleep health) as well as fall detection. Caregivers only need to install the relevant smart hardware at home and can then remotely monitor infants in real time 24 hours a day via an APP, providing all-round protection for infants’ health.

The monitor adopts a design inspired by planets and planetary rings. Its soft geometric language creates a friendly vibe, helps it blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment, and builds a comfortable growth space for infants.

A novel distance-multi-beam-based optimal respiratory waveform selection algorithm for Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) radar makes full use of information such as distance and angle. It also employs beamforming technology to reduce interference effects caused by MIMO radar. By integrating information from multiple channels, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of respiratory rate is significantly improved, enhancing the reliability of respiratory rate estimation.

When an infant is within the radar monitoring range, the receiver can receive the millimeter-wave radiation signals acting on the infant. Through analyzing and processing the returned signals, it can determine information such as the infant’s sleep status, respiration, and heart rate. The millimeter-wave tomographic sensing technology enables non-invasive detection of the infant’s sleep, body movements, and sleeping postures—it can penetrate multiple media such as air, clothing, and bedding without contact, and capture all subtle movement information of the infant with high precision. This technology realizes infant position detection and tracking, respiration and heart rate monitoring, and human posture recognition. With all-time operation capability, it can accurately capture the posture and movement trends of the monitored target.

The launch of this AI Baby Monitor undoubtedly provides parents with a brand-new option. It not only demonstrates extraordinary talent and innovative spirit in design but also offers strong support for infant health monitoring in terms of function. Therefore, winning the honor of the 2023 Contemporary Good Design Award is undoubtedly the best recognition for the AI Baby Monitor.
